Ted Shin, the Chair of the Department of Industrial Design at Metro State University of Denver, could see Coronavirus coming, first in China then in Italy. He saw the strain on healthcare workers and decided to act. Healthcare workers were running out of personal protective equipment and he knew the university could help. After discussions with the dean, they re-opened the university’s 3-D printing lab, even while the school was closed. A few phone calls later they joined a group from make4covid.co to start printing PPE face shields.

Human-bear conflicts are on the rise, which is why a Colorado Parks and Wildlife research team are visiting bears dens. This den visit is one of the last in a six-year study of black bears in Colorado that challenges core assumptions state wildlife managers have relied on for decades. Rising conflicts with people motivated the CPW study, which will be published this year. Seldom have scientists tracked and monitored so many bears so closely, even analyzing fur to verify what bears ate.

All sound is water. The white noise of the first waterfall and the rushing of the creek fills my ears, but I can hear more-powerful falls downstream, and the persistent drip-drip-drip of spray making its way down the slot canyon’s glistening walls, back to the crystal green source.

Roping has long been a part of the National Western Stock Show in Denver. Shock shows came about for people to sell and show off their best animals or stock. Horses help manage the stock, retired Air Force Lt. Col. Val Baker explained.

Baker worked as a communications officer in the Air Force. Twenty five years of active duty service. Even while deployed, horses seemed to find a way into her life. While she served in Iraq, she even got to meet Saddam Hussein’s stallions.

Baker has family roots with the National Western Stock Show. Her grandfather showed stock at the show, and he and her parents showed horses. Thanks to her mom, she's been riding since before she was born.

Baker has been roping since high school and her face still lights up when she talks about it. “Oh, we’re all adrenalin junkies.”

Wines Off Wynkoop, a locally owned bottle shop in downtown Denver, had a rush of customers after Mayor Michael Hancock ordered their closure the next day. The order was part of a city-wide "stay at home" policy to slow the spread of coronavirus.

Women at Holly Creek Retirement Community meet for an hour every week to sew blankets and knit sweaters, hats and bootie sets. Their work is donated to Warm Hearts, Warm Babies, a nonprofit that provides clothing and blankets to newborns and young children in crisis.

Rachel Brody didn’t want to strike. She’s a kindergarten teacher who loves her job. She was worried about the effect of the strike on her kids. But she did strike. So did at least 2,600 fellow educators across the Denver Public Schools system. They left their classrooms to demand better pay and a clearer pay system. They chanted and picketed outside their schools and rallied at the Capitol in Denver. It was the city’s first public school strike in 25 years. Rachel Brody shared what it was like to experience the strike.
